May often holds important announcements from Federal Government as annual Budgets are delivered and politicians seek to provide positive change for their voters. This past month has been no exception, with two crucial measures being announced that could impact family law and family lawyers in South Australia.
$80 Million for Family Law
Announced in the recent Federal Budget, the Turnbull government has pledged $80 million to frontline family law services, to introduce elements such as parental management hearings and extra family consultants across the country. Parental management hearings seek to give self-represented parties an ability to resolve their matters without need of a traditional court process. In effect, this is aimed at decreasing the burden on the courts and providing greater outcomes for families across the country. These changes are designed to give serious cases more time and attention to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for all involved.

Comprehensive Family Law Review
In addition to the spending announcement, the Federal Government also declared their intension to undertake a comprehensive review of the existing family law system, as set out in the Family Law Act 1976. The Australian Law Reform Commission has been asked to review the current system and suggest changes required to meet contemporary issues facing families. Having been in place for 40 years, the current act is dated and in much need of an update, and we look forward to the upcoming announcement of proposed changes.
